Toni’s Story.

When I first came to Nelson Were Design, I was looking for a work placement while I was at the Prince’s Trust Program. I was curious and fascinated by how the bags were made because they were all so unique and beautifully made, I asked Nelson if I can do my work placement there with him, he said ‘sure I just need to ask my wife because she is my business partner and I will need your contact details’. So I gave him my phone number, however, I didn’t hear from him for 3 weeks, during which time I did a work experience placement at Pop Up Margate shop. However, I still wanted to work at Nelson’s’ because it was so fascinating to learn. So I went back one day and asked again because I was annoyed that I didn’t get a reply, so I asked again but more passionately.

So Nelson asked for my number again, so I gave it to him again. After a couple days I got a phone call from him and he said that he would take me on but I would have to do a four-week trial first to see how I would get on. So when I finished the Prince’s Trust program I went to Nelson and started to work with him.

Ever since then, I have been working with him and Jenny his wife and I love every second of it. I enjoy working and learning with Nelson because of it a comfortable and friendly environment, me and Nelson have a laugh as well. Nelson and Jenny are easy to talk to and they both make me smile all the time, even their three boys as well, they are a very nice family.

I want to continue working with them because they give me more than skills and experience, they are giving me a chance to do something worthwhile in my life when otherwise I would be struggling to find a job or an apprenticeship. I enjoy making and getting creative, I even started to draw my own designs in lunch breaks because I want to create a designer bag that I can be proud of like Nelson does.

There is no expression on how thankful I am, I can’t thank them enough for giving me a chance to train and learn with them. I want to continue learning with them because now they have now become a second family to me, I hope I can continue working with them.
